What is a Handicap Index®?
A USGA Handicap Index® is designed to allow golfers of differing abilities to compete on an equitable basis, thereby increasing the enjoyment they derive from a round of golf. A Handicap Index (HI) is revised throughout the golf season and is based on golfers' scores, as well as the relative difficulty of the courses on which their rounds are played.
While its primary purpose is to allow score adjustments that level the playing field when golfers of varying skill levels compete, a handicap index also provides a measurable means of tracking improvement. Having one is a requirement for many tournaments.
When should you get a Handicap Index®?
If you're just learning the game and spend the majority of your time taking lessons or practicing, then it may be too early for you to get a handicap index. However, once you start playing on course and begin keeping score, EWGA encourages you to establish an index.
How do you get a Handicap Index®?
You can obtain a USGA Handicap Index® through any USGA member club. However, as a service to our members, the Cincinnati Chapter offers two options:
1) Your EWGA membership includes the opportunity to obtain/maintain a USGA Handicap Index® through the Association's Golf Life Management System (GLMS) at no additional charge. (For more about GLMS, see below.)
2) As a member club of the Greater Cincinnati Golf Association (GCGA), the Cincinnati Chapter can also help you obtain a USGA Handicap Index through the Golf Handicap and Information Network (GHIN) system for an additional fee of $20 per year.
More about GHIN
Maintained by the USGA, GHIN is the world's largest handicap computation service. With a GHIN index, you can post your scores online at GHIN.com or at any GHIN computer kiosk, which are located at almost every golf course.
Many tournaments, including those organized by the GCGA (which some EWGA members like to play in) require a GHIN index. In order to maintain our representation in the GCGA, the Chapter must have at least 10 members registered in the GHIN system.

More about GLMS
The EWGA Golf Life Management System (GLMS) is powered by GolfNet, the second largest provider of handicap and tournament software and web-based services for golf associations and clubs.
GLMS offers generally the same services as GHIN, but also enables members to track personal game statistics. GLMS is accessible only through the Association headquarters Web site ewgacom.
To use GLMS, you will need to "activate" your account. Click here for instructions.
User Alert. As of June 2009 and until further notice, GMLS users must post scores manually. Learn more.
